Elle accueillit de nombreux conciles dont celui de la \u00ab\u00a0Paix de Dieu\u00a0\u00bb en 989. Construite selon la l\u00e9gende par Charlemagne et Roger, comte de Limoges au VII\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, elle connut de nombreuses destructions, reconstructions et agrandissements.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9grad\u00e9e lors de la Guerre de Cent Ans, ruin\u00e9e par les Guerres de Religions puis d\u00e9molie sous la R\u00e9volution, elle sera vendue comme bien national en 1790.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Antiquaires de l&rsquo;Ouest et Prosper M\u00e9rim\u00e9e intervinrent pour la conservation du monument.
